Report by Secular Party of Australia 9 April 2006

The Annual Conference of the Council of Australian Humanist societies 2006

was held in Coolangatta, 7-9 April 2006. Dr John Perkins spoke to the Conference promoting the Secular Party of Australia. In his address he noted that:

  • in order to further the Humanist and Secular cause, we need to be more aware of the psychological motivations behind religious belief
  • terrorism and the "war on terror" had increased religious violence and led to removal of civil liberties
  • religion is intruding into political issues like that regarding same-sex marriages
  • morality and politics should be based on universal principles, not religious dogma
  • the dysfunctional nature of religious thinking was hindering efforts to solve grave world problems
  • stronger international institutions are required to combat terrorism and address global warming

John agreed with questioners that the new Party might not win elections straight away, but felt it must act as a moral influence toward better law making, as smaller and even single issue parties have done.
